Brougham Castle, Westmorland

Brougham Castle is a mediæval building in Westmorland. A Roman fort originally occupied the current site and was later taken by the Norman family of Vieuxpont to build their castle. By 1268 the castle had passed to Robert Clifford who was an important figure in the Scottish wars which started in 1296. He carried out much work to strengthen the defences. In 1643 Lady Anne Clifford inherited the Clifford Estate and in 1649 she moved north and spent the next 26 years rebuilding churches and castles, including Brougham Castle. She died at Brougham Castle in 1676 and after this the castle quickly fell into ruin. As a ruin, Brougham Castle inspired a painting by J. M. W. Turner, and was mentioned at the start of William Wordsworth's poem 'The Prelude'. It is within the council area of Westmorland and Furness.
