Brompton, Kent

Brompton is a large suburban village in Kent. It is located between Chatham Dockyard and the town of Gillingham. Brompton was a planned settlement laid out in the 17th century by landowner Thomas Rogers Esquire. In the 1750s, with the building of the Chatham Lines to defend Chatham Dockyard, the village became completely surrounded by military establishments, limiting scope for further expansion. Brompton Barracks has been home to the Royal Engineers since 1812 and also houses The Royal School of Military Engineering. The village is within the council area of Medway.
