Brocavvm, Westmorland

Brocavvm (or Brougham Fort) is a Roman Fort in Westmorland. The fort dates from the 2nd to 4th centuries and was constructed on the south bank of the River Eamont near its confluence with the River Lowther. This is at the junction of main north-south and east-west Roman roads which intersected and crossed the River Eamont at this point. The fort was 540 feet by 360 feet covering over 3.4 acres. There are ditches on all sides and the line of the fort walls can be seen except in the north. The fort survives as earthworks and the 13th century Brougham Castle now occupies part of the site. It is known that stones from the Roman fort were used in the construction of the castle. It is within the council area of Westmorland and Furness.
Historic England Scheduled Monument 1007186.
