Bristol, Gloucestershire / Somerset

Bristol is an ancient city in the West Country of England. Bristol lies in both Gloucestershire and Somerset, the old course of the River Avon (known as the Floating Harbour) forming the county border. Its prosperity has been linked with the sea since its earliest days, though its economy is now based around the creative media, electronics and aerospace industries. The city centre docks have been regenerated as a centre of heritage and culture. Bristol received a royal charter in 1155 and was granted independence of the county authorities in 1373. In common with other towns granted "county corporate" status, this has never been taken to mean it no longer lies within its historic counties. Bristol lies in the council area of Bristol.
