Brig O' Balgownie, Aberdeenshire
Brig O' Balgownie is a 13th-century bridge spanning the River Don at Old Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire. Its single gothic arch has a span of over 39ft. Construction was begun in the late 13th century by Richard Cementarius, but not completed until 1320 at the time of the Scottish War of Independence. It was extensively renovated from 1607 to 1611. For five centuries possession of the bridge was the only way to move large armies quickly along the eastern coast of Aberdeenshire. The bridge ceased to be a major route in 1830 when the new Bridge of Don was built 500 yards downstream. The bridge is within the council area of City of Aberdeen.
