Bridgnorth Castle, Shropshire

Bridgnorth Castle is the remains of a Norman castle in Bridgnorth, Shropshire. The castle was founded in 1101 by Robert de Belleme. In 1102, King Henry I took control of the castle. Much of the outer building, which consists of shattered walls, dates to around 1105-1113. Its principal feature, a square great tower, was built in 1160. During the Civil War, Bridgnorth Castle was a Royalist stronghold, until defeated by the Parliamentarians and demolished on Cromwell's orders. It is within the council area of Shropshire.
