Brereton Hall, Cheshire

Brereton Hall is an Elizabethan house near Brereton Green, Cheshire. It was built in 1586 for Sir William Brereton. The hall was the family seat of the Lords Brereton but the Lordship ended in 1722. At the start of the 19th century the hall was suffering from neglect. John Howard bought the house and restored it. It had again fallen into a state of disrepair at the start of the 20th century but became a girls boarding school from 1945 until 1992. Brereton later became the retreat of a pop star who built a recording studio at the back. It was sold in 2000 and had since been a family home. Planning permission for a hotel was rejected in 2017, and Brereton Hall has since come up for sale a number of times. It is within the council area of Cheshire East.
