Brentford, Middlesex

Brentford is a suburban town in Middlesex, where the River Brent enters the River Thames. The name is recorded as Breguntford in 705 in an Anglo-Saxon charter - 'ford over the River Brent'. The town of Brentwood developed from two ancient settlements which still have distinct identities: Old Brentford lies at the mouth of the Brent on its east bank; New Brentford lies to the west, either side of Brentford Bridge. Brentford Dock opened in 1859. From 1894-1927, for local government purposes, the town was the basis of Brentford urban district and from 1927-1965 formed part of Brentford and Chiswick urban district (later municipal borough). The town is within the council area of Hounslow.
