Bremenivm, Northumberland
Bremenivm (or Bremenium, aka High Rochester Roman Fort) are the remains of a Roman fort in Northumberland. The name Bremenium means The Place of the Roaring Stream. It was oblong in shape, and measures 485 feet north to south and 445 feet east to west, giving an area of just over 5 acres. The fort was one of the defensive structures built along Dere Street and one of the last forts north of Hadrians wall to remain occupied until the 270s AD. It could warn of attacks from the north and it also guarded Dere Street, the Roman’s easterly route into Scotland, and a road running east to the Devil’s Causeway. The fort is now part of the village green of Rochester but there are still remains to see. The west wall is the best preserved and consists of a nine-feet-high bank with stone facing. The west gate is complete to the springing of the arch. However, much of the stonework has been plundered over the years for local buildings. It is within the council area of Northumberland.
