Branthwaite Hall, Cumberland

Branthwaite Hall is a pele tower near Dean, Cumberland. Branthwaite Hall was built in the mid-15th century by the Skelton family, who acquired the surrounding manor from the Branthwaites by marriage. It is considered one of the best-preserved early houses in the Lake District, it includes a 14th/15th-century pele tower with an attached 16th-century hall wing. The Pele tower itself is a substantial structure four storeys high, with walls approximately five feet thick, measuring 32 x 27 feet, and a spiral staircase. It also features a well-preserved vaulted basement. The hall was 60 feet long and 42 wide but was largely remodelled in 1604. Subsequent work was conducted in the 1670s to give the property a grander appearance. The Skeltons held the hall until 1757 and fell into disrepair and was derelict, until it was restored between 1985 and 1986 by the National Coal Board, which converted the property into offices. It was sold privately in 1992. It is within the council area of Cumberland.
