Braniel (often referred to as the Braniel) is an urban area in east Belfast, County Down. It is within the townland of Braniel, in the civil parish of Knockbreda. Braniel townland remains almost entirely rural until the mid 20th century. The northern part of the townland was developed as the Braniel estate from the 1950s, as the Belfast urban area spread eastwards. The area is within the council area of Belfast.
