Bolton is a large town in Lancashire, close to the West Pennine Moors. Bolton became a market town and borough by charter in 1253. The Industrial Revolution saw it grow into one of the largest and most productive centres of cotton spinning in the world. Bolton contains a wealth of historic buildings. Hall i' th' Wood, now a museum, is a late mediæval yeoman farmer's house. The Great Hall of Smithills Hall was built in the 14th century when William de Radcliffe. The Town Hall is an imposing neoclassical building opened in June 1873 by the Prince of Wales. Notable former mill buildings include Falcon Mill, Sir John Holden's Mill and the Swan Lane Mills Complex. The town is within the council area of Bolton.
