Bogside, Londonderry

Bogside is an urban area in Londonderry, County Londonderry. It is within the townland of Edenballymore, in the civil parish of Templemore. The area north of the walled city had been labelled "The Bogside" by Sir Henry Docwra in 1600, at that time a marshland where a channel of the River Foyle had once flowed. The Long Tower Church (St Columba's) was first built in 1783, close to the site of the 12th-century cathedral of Teampall Mor, ruined by the 16th century. The area began to be developed for housing from the early 19th century, developing into a densely-populated, predominantly Catholic working-class district. During the 1960s it became a centre for the Catholic civil rights movement. It became a prominent nationalist stronghold during The Troubles - marked by events like the Battle of the Bogside (1969) and Bloody Sunday (1972) - and becoming the centre of the Free Derry area from 1969-1972. The area contains many memorials to that period. The Bogside has seen significant redevelopment since the 1990s. The area is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
