Blyth is a port town in Northumberland. The port of Blyth dates from the 12th century, but the development of the modern town only began in the first quarter of the 18th century. Though the main industries which helped the town to prosper, including shipbuilding and coal mining, have vanished, the port still thrives. The "Spirit of the Staithes" sculpture on Blyth's Quayside was unveiled by Princess Anne on 28 May 2003. The town is within the council area of Northumberland.
