Bloomfield, Down

Bloomfield is a suburban area in east Belfast, County Down. It is within the townland of Ballyhackamore, in the civil parish of Holywood. The area is named from Bloomfield House, dating from the late 18th century. Robert Boyd, the owner from the mid 19th century, sponsored the opening of Bloomfield Railway Station in 1879. The area then developed with some older, grander homes alongside working-class housing. The singer-songwriter Van Morrison was born (1945) and brought up in Hyndford Street. Bloomfield Presbyterian Church (1898) was designed in the Gothic style by JJ Phillips & Son. St Donard's Church (C of I), opened in 1911, was designed by Edward Henry Lingen-Barker in Gothic-revival style. Bloomfield House was demolished in the 1930s. The area is within the council area of Belfast.
