Blackwall, Middlesex

Blackwall is an urban area in Poplar, Middlesex. Part of the hamlet (later parish) of Poplar, Blackwall has a proud maritime tradition. Both Raleigh and Nelson are said to have had homes here. The first colonists of Virginia sailed from Blackwall in 1606. The East and West India Docks, constructed at the beginning of the 19th century, brought thriving trade. The Blackwall Tunnel (1897) carries road traffic under the Thames to the Greenwich Peninsula. The area is within the council area of Tower Hamlets.
