Black Country, Staffordshire / Worcestershire
The Black Country is a loosely defined area of southern Staffordshire and northern Worcestershire, formerly an intensively industrialised area. Whilst the towns of Dudley and Tipton are generally considered to lie at its centre, there is no standard definition of its bounds. The term appears to have been in common use by the mid 19th century. Although to a large extent now a conurbation, the towns and villages of the Black Country remain recognisable, distinct communities, with their own local identities.
