Black Chapel, Essex
Black Chapel is a late 15th-century chapel near Hounslow Green, Essex. It is a small timber-framed building consisting of a nave, a 19th-century aisle on the north side and a tiny chancel. Beween the nave and chancel is a 15th or 16th-century screen of nine bays with traceried heads. It is one of the few remaining "peculiar" chapels (outside the authority of the diocesan bishops), and said to be a monastic chapel probably Augustinian. It is within the council area of Chelmsford (Essex).
