Bitterne, Hampshire
Bitterne is a former village that is now usually considered an eastern suburb of Southampton, Hampshire. The earliest reference is as 'Byterne' in the 11th century, though neighbouring Bitterne Manor is of great antiquity, being the site the site of the Roman settlement of Clausentum. In the mid 18th century, a number of large residencies were built in the Bitterne area. The village developed fully after the opening of the Northam Bridge in 1799. Bitterne was incorporated into the municipal area of Southampton in 1920. It is within the council area of Southampton.
