Bishop Auckland, Durham
Bishop Auckland is a historic market town in County Durham. The Prince Bishops established a hunting lodge here in 1183. This was later remodelled as Auckland Castle, which became the official residence of the Bishop of Durham in 1832. During the Industrial Revolution, the town grew rapidly as coal mining became important. The town is within the council area of County Durham.
