Birchington, Kent

Birchington (or Birchington-on-Sea) is a village in Kent. It lies on the coast facing the North Sea between Herne Bay and Margate. It was first recorded in 1240 as 'Birchenton'. All Saints' Church dates from around 1350. The Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti is buried in the churchyard. The original village site is half a mile from the coast. Birchington railway station opened in 1863, after which the area between the railway and the sea began to be developed, The village is within the council area of Thanet (Kent).
