Bideford, Devon

Bideford is a historic port town on the estuary of the River Torridge in the north of Devon. The manor of Bideford dates from Saxon times. A charter was granted in 1272 by Henry VII. The original 24-arch Long Bridge across the Torridge was built from timber in 1286. This was replaced in 1476 by the surviving masonry bridge. From the 16th to the 18th century, Bideford flourished as a port for colonial trade. While its role as a commercial port declined during the 20th century, Bideford developed into a tourist destination, market town, and service centre for north Devon. Bideford Town Hall (1851) was designed by Richard Davie Gould in the Elizabethan style. The town is within the council area of Torridge (Devon).
