Bexley, Kent

Bexley (often now known as Old Bexley) is a large suburban village in Kent. The village developed where two ancient routeways crossed a ford on the River Cray. It is listed in Domesday as 'Bexlea'. The 13th century church of St Mary the Virgin is famed for its spire which resembles an octagonal cone balancing on top of a truncated pyramid. The Manor House dates from the 16th century. From 1895-1965, for local government purposes, the village was the basis of Bexley urban district, during which period the area to the north and west of the village saw substantial suburban development. Since the creation of the London Borough of Bexley, it has become common to refer to the village itself as 'Old Bexley' or 'Bexley Village'. The village is within the council area of Bexley.
