Bew Castle, Cumberland

Bew Castle (or Bewcastle) is the site of a Roman fort in Cumberland. The site was adapted into a castle by the Normans in 1092 and surrounded by a dry moat. The castle was destroyed in 1173 but was rebuilt towards the end of the 14th century. It was reputedly destroyed by Cromwell in 1641. Only the south and east walls survive. It is within the council area of Cumberland.
