Bethnal Green, Middlesex
Bethnal Green is a metropolitan district which forms part of the East End of London, in the south-east of Middlesex. The settlement, as part of Stepney parish, developed from the 13th century and became a separate parish in 1743. It developed as a manufacturing area, notably for chair-making and silk-weaving, from the 18th century. From 1900-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish was the basis of the metropolitan borough of Bethnal Green. Bethnal Green Town Hall (1910) is in the Baroque style. York Hall, now a gym and leisure complex, was opened by the Duke of York in 1929. The Bethnal Green tube disaster of 3rd March 1943 was the worst civilian disaster of the Second World War. The area is within the council area of Tower Hamlets.
