Benburb Castle, Tyrone

Benburb Castle (aka Wingfield's Castle) is a 17th-century Castle, dramatically located on the cliff edge above the River Blackwater in the grounds of Benburb Servite Priory, in the townland of Benburgh, County Tyrone. It was built by Sir Richard Wingfield around 1615. The bawn walls enclose an irregular rectangular area, the walls standing to almost full height, plentifully supplied with gun loops. At the north-west and north-east corners are large rectangular towers with fire places. At the south end is a circular tower with a stair down to a postern gate at the cliff edge. The monument is in the care of the Department for Communities. The monument is within the council area of Mid Ulster.
