Belgic Oppidum, Hertfordshire

Belgic Oppidum (aka Wheathampstead earthwork) is an Iron Age defensive enclosure, situated on a hilltop overlooking the River Lea near Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire. An irregular area of about 100 acres is defined by two massive ditches, the Devil's Dyke (130ft wide and 40ft deep in places) to the west and The Slad to the east, probably originally continued around the south. Excavations in the 1930s established a late Iron Age date, 1st century BC, with possible contemporary occupation including a hearth with Belgic pottery. Hence the suggestion that this as a Belgic settlement or "oppidum". It is within the council area of St Albans (Hertfordshire).
