Belfast Castle, Antrim

Belfast Castle is a 19th-century Scottish Baronial style castle, located on the south-eastern slopes of Cave Hill, over-looking Belfast Lough and the city of Belfast in County Antrim. It is within the townland of Low-Wood in the civil parish of Shankill. The present house was built around 1870 by the 3rd Marquis of Donegall, to designs by John Lanyon. The four storey tower and complex roofline with stepped gables and turrets of the castle conform to the mid to late Victorian taste for splendour and romanticism. The interior has well proportioned rooms accessed off a grand stairwell and many fine historic details. The castle and all of its densely wooded grounds were gifted by the Earl of Shaftesbury to the city of Belfast in 1937. This is the latest of several buildings known as 'Belfast Castle', stretching back to the 14th century, though the first on this site. It is within the council area of Belfast.
