Beighton, Derbyshire
Beighton is a village in Derbyshire, lying to the west of the River Rother. The village is listed as 'Bectune' in 9th-century Anglo-Saxon records of Derbyshire land-owners. Historically, farming and smithing were the main occupations in the village, though coal mining became prominent from the late 19th century. Despite being brought into the Sheffield municipal area in 1967, it maintains a village identity and largely rural setting. The church of St Mary the Virgin dates from around c. 1150. It is within the council area of Sheffield.
