Beeley Hilltop, Derbyshire
Beeley Hilltop (aka Beeley Hilltop House) is a manor house near Beeley, Derbyshire. It is one of the oldest houses in Derbyshire, believed to date back to around 1250. The present house is an early 17th-century building constructed from coursed squared gritstone with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof. It features an H-plan design and includes details such as mullion windows with hoodmoulds and coped gables. It was originally known as 'The Greaves', from which the Greaves family took their surname, and became the manor house of Beeley parish in 1559. It was renamed Beeley Hilltop House (or Beeley Hill Top) after being rebuilt in the early 17th century, where the arms of King James I can reportedly still be seen above a bedroom mantelpiece. It reverted to a farmhouse in the late 17th century and was acquired by the 3rd Duke of Devonshire in 1747. It is within the council area of Derbyshire Dales (Derbyshire).
