Bedford, Bedfordshire

Bedford is the county town of Bedfordshire. It stands on the Great Ouse, the heart of the town to the north of the river. Bedford was founded at a ford on the River Great Ouse and is thought to have been the burial place of King Offa of Mercia. Bedford Castle Mound is the remnant of Bedford's mediæval castle. The Embankment is the name given to the gardens lining the Great Ouse as it flows through the town centre. The town is within the council area of Bedford.
