Beckton, Essex

Beckton is an urban area in the south of East Ham, Essex. The East Ham Levels remained empty until the 1860s, during which a major sewage works was constructed. In 1870 the Gas, Light and Coke Company established a major gasworks here. Housing was built for the workers and the whole site was named Beckton after the governor of the company, Simon Adams Beck. The area remains one of mixed residential and industrial use. It is within the council area of Newham.
