Beckenham, Kent

Beckenham is a town in Kent. It is listed as 'Bacheham' in Domesday. It remained a rural village until the railway arrived in 1857, after which it saw a boom in housing and retail development. From 1894-1965, for local government purposes, it was the basis of Beckenham urban district (a municipal borough from 1935), a period which saw further suburban development to the south of the town. St George's Church dates from around 1100, but was extensively rebuilt in the 19th century. The lych gate dates from the 13th century and nearby almshouses from 1694. Beckenham Place mansion dates from c. 1760. Comedian Bob Monkhouse was born in Beckenham in 1928. The town is within the council area of Bromley.
