Battle, Sussex

Battle is a market town in Sussex. Battle contains the site of, and is named after, the Battle of Hastings. The town grew around Battle Abbey, constructed on the orders of King William to commemorate the battle and atone for the resulting slaughter. Opposite the Abbey is the church of St Mary the Virgin, consecrated in 1115. The town is within the council area of Rother (East Sussex).
