Barton upon Irwell is a former village that is now a suburb of Eccles, Lancashire. Barton is on the north bank of the River Irwell (Manchester Ship Canal). The Barton Swing Aqueduct (1894) which carries the Bridgewater Canal across the Manchester Ship Canal is considered a major feat of Victorian civil engineering. Barton upon Irwell is within the council area of Salford.
