Barnstaple, Devon

Barnstaple is a historic market town, located at the head of the estuary of the River Taw in northern Devon. From the 14th century, it was licensed to export wool. Great wealth ensued. By the 19th century, with the harbour silting up, the town transitioned into a regional centre for rail transport, shipping, and iron founding. Barnstaple Castle is the remains of a Norman motte and bailey. The 16-arch Long Bridge was first built around 1200. The town centre still preserves a mediæval character. Queen Anne's Chapel is believed to date from the early 14th century. Queen Anne's Walk (aka The Mercantile Exchange) was completed in 1713 as a meeting place for the town's merchants. The Victorian Pannier Market survives, with a high glass and timber roof on iron columns. The town is within the council area of North Devon (Devon).
