Barnsbury, Middlesex

Barnsbury is an urban area in the north-west of Islington, Middlesex. The name, recorded as 'Bernersbury' 1274, is derived from the Berners family, manorial lords who gained ownership of a large part of Islington after the Norman Conquest. The area remained semi-rural until the 1830s from when it was developed alongside the more general development of Islington. The area is within the council area of Islington.
