Barnet Gate, Hertfordshire / Middlesex

Barnet Gate is a village on the border between Hertfordshire and Middlesex. There was a Roman settlement here and in the Anglo-Saxon period it was known as Grendeles Gatan (Grendel's Gate or Grendelgate) after the monster in the epic poem Beowulf. After the development of CHipping Barnet it became Barnet Gate. The gate, which no longer exists, may have marked the border between Middlesex and Hertfordshire. The village is within the council area of Barnet .
