Barnes, Surrey
Barnes is a suburban town in Surrey, on the River Thames. St Mary's Church dates from the 12th century. Barnes was a large village at the start of the 19th century, during which it saw substantial development. From 1894-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish of Barnes was the basis of Barnes urban district (a municipal borough from 1932). The Terrace is a riverside road lined with Georgian mansions. Milbourne House was home to the novelist Henry Fielding in about 1750. Barnes is within the council area of Richmond upon Thames.
