Barnack Hills & Holes, Northamptonshire

Barnack Hills & Holes is the site of a mediæval limestone quarry at Barnack, Northamptonshire. Barnack stone was a valuable building stone first exploited by the Romans. Stone from Barnack was used to build Peterborough and Ely Cathedrals. By the year 1500 all the useful stone had been removed. The site has since become an orchid-rich grassland. It is within the council area of Peterborough.
