Barlow Woodseats, Derbyshire

Barlow Woodseats is a manor house near Barlow Common, Derbyshire. The current house dates from 1624, but a dwelling has been on the site since at least 1269. The hall is the only remaining mansion house in the parish of Barlow. It was briefly the first marital home of Elizabeth, the famous Bess of Hardwick, in her teens. The property has passed through several prominent families over the centuries, including the Earl of Shrewsbury and the Duke of Portland. The main house is Jacobean, built of coursed sandstone with a stone-slated roof. It features a remarkable, original Tudor cruck barn, dating to 1530, which is one of the best-kept examples in Derbyshire. In the 21st century, the hall and its renovated outbuildings have been run as a venue for weddings, corporate events and private parties. It is within the council area of North East Derbyshire (Derbyshire).
