Barking, Essex
Barking is a town in Essex, lying on the east bank of the River Roding close where it meets the River Thames. The manor of Barking dates from Saxon times. Barking Abbey was founded in AD 666 by Saint Erkenwald and dissolved in 1539. The Curfew Tower (1460) and the 13th-century church of St Margaret of Antioch remain. From the 14th century Barking's main industry was fishing. As fishing declined in the 19th century, riverside industries developed. The town's residential districts expanded throughout the later part of the 19th century, throughout the 20th century and, with the development of Barking Riverside by the Thames, into the 21st century. From 1895-1965, for local government purposes, the town was the basis of Barking Town urban district, a municipal borough from 1931. Eastbury Manor House (NT) is a 16th-century Elizabethan manor house. The town is within the council area of Barking and Dagenham.
