Barcroft, Lancashire
Barcroft is a hall located two miles south-east of Burnley in Cliviger, Lancashire. The Barcroft family who were documented as early as the 13th century were second only to the Townleys as land owners in Cliviger. The present Barcroft Hall was built in the early part of the 17th century, though there are traces of an older edifice of much earlier date. William Barcroft, who built the present hall, died in 1620, leaving one daughter and three sons. Over the years the property fell into significant disrepair and was purchased by Charles Townley in 1794 for £1,640, when the Hall was completely re-furbished and renovated. Townley though continued to live in Townley Hall. Later, in 1901, Lady O’Hagan (of the Townley Family) took furniture and fittings from Barcroft Hall for a renovation project of another local property, Hollins Hall. Barcroft is important today not only because of the early date of the North Wing, but also because of the quality of its construction and its largely unaltered form. It is grade II listed. It is within the council area of Burnley (Lancashire).
