Bangor Castle, Down

Bangor Castle (aka Bangor City Hall) is a Victorian country house, now a civic building, situated in Castle Park, Bangor, County Down. It is within the townland of Corporation, in the civil parish of Bangor. The site was first occupied by Bangor Abbey, established by St Comgall in 558, and had become a Franciscan monastery at its dissolution in 1542. Sir James Hamilton, the town's founder, had a mansion built on the site around 1611. This was remodelled as Bangor Castle in the late 18th century. The current building was commissioned by The Hon Robert Edward Ward, designed by William Burn in the Jacobethan style, built in ashlar stone and was completed in 1852. It became the Town Hall in 1952. It is within the council area of Ards and North Down.
