Balmerino Abbey, Fife
Balmerino Abbey is a ruined Cistercian abbey at Balmerino, Fife. The abbey is in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. It was founded from 1227 to 1229 by monks from Melrose Abbey with the patronage of Ermengarde de Beaumont and King Alexander II of Scotland. It appears to have died out in the late 16th century. The grounds contain a 400-year-old Spanish chestnut tree – alleged to be the oldest tree in Fife. The monument is within the council area of Fife.
