Ballynahinch, Down
Ballynahinch is a market town, lying on the Ballynahinch River in County Down. It is within the townland of Ballynahinch, in the civil parish of Magheradrool. The town was founded in the late 17th century by landowner Sir George Rawdon. Charles II granted the town the right to hold a weekly market and two fairs each year. Therefater, the town prospoered as a market town. Starting in the 1700s, the natural mineral waters from wells near Ballynahinch gained fame for their perceived curative powers. The Ker family significantly developed the area, building hotels, a ballroom, and a golf course, making Ballynahinch a thriving tourist destination. Ballynahinch Market House (1795) is in the neoclassical style. The First Presbyterian Church was built in 1751, a congregation having been present in the town since its earliest days. St Patrick's Roman Church (RC) dates from 1812. Montalto House was built by Sir John Rawdon in the mid 1750s. The town is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
