Ballymacarret, Down

Ballymacarret is a former town that is now a large urban area in east Belfast, lying on the east bank of the River Laggan in County Down. The area is within the townland of Ballymacarret, in the civil parish of Knockbreda. Until the 19th century, Ballymacarret townland was almost entirely rural. By the early 19th century a village had developed along the main road from Belfast to Newtownards. The first half of the 19th century saw massive development on the east side of the Laggan, with chemical works, felts works, rope-making, railway workshops and other industries developing. Ballymacarret had grown to a sizeable town by the mid 19th century. Ballymacarrett was incorporated into the municipal boundaries of Belfast in 1852. The arrival of shipbuilding saw a further huge increase in population. Templemore Baths opened in 1893. St Patrick's (C of I) was opened in 1893. It was severely damaged during the Belfast Blitz but restored to original plans. The area is within the council area of Belfast.
