Ballyholme, Down

Ballyholme is a former hamlet that is now a coastal suburb of Bangor, lying around Ballyholme Bay in County Down. It is within the townland of Ballyholme, in the civil parish of Bangor. Until the mid 19th century, Ballyholme townland was rural apart from the hamlet of Ballyholme in the townland's centre (close to the extant Ballyholme Windmill) and a few scattered farms. The area saw large-scale development from the late 19th century, initially along the bay and its beach. By the late 20th century, almost the whole of the townland had been developed. Dufferin Villas (1875-1880) were among the first properties along the seafront. During World War II the Ballyholme Bay was used as a base for American troops training for the Normandy Landings. Ballyholme Methodist Church dates from 1936. Ballyholme Presbyterian Church opened in 1950. The area is within the council area of Ards and North Down.
