Ballyclare, Antrim

Ballyclare is a town, lying on the Six Mile Water in County Antrim. It is within the townland of Ballyclare, in the civil parishes of Grange of Doagh and Ballynure. The town is believed to date from the time of the Plantation. George II granted it permission to hold two annual fairs in 1756. The town grew in the 19th century with the coming of the railway. It became an important industrial town with both a large paper mill and a large linen bleaching green. As industry declined in the late 20th century, it became a local service centre with a dormitory town for Belfast. Ballyclare Town Hall is a neoclassical building, opened in 1935, based around a 19th-century market hall. The present building of the Old Presbyterian (Non-subscribing) Church dates from 1800. The town is within the council area of Antrim and Newtownabbey.
