Ballycastle, Antrim
Ballycastle is a small seaside town, around Ballycastle Bay in County Antrim. It is within the townland of Town Parks, in the civil parish of Romoan. The town developed during the 17th century around Ballycastle Castle, erected in 1625 by Sir Randal McDonnell, Earl of Antrim, on the site of an older fortification. During the 18th century, Hugh Boyd build a new harbour and pier. He also established coal shafts, potteries, a glass factory and other industries, all of which saw Ballycastle become a flourishing town. The Holy Trinity Church (C of I) was built by Hugh Boyd and consecrated in 1865. St Patrick's and St Brigid's Church (RC) was designed by Fr Jeremiah McAuley and dedicated in 1874. The octagonal spire, added in 1898, was used as a mast by Marconi to send the first radio broadcast to Rathlin Island. The town is within the council area of Causeway Coast and Glens.
